Griots R We is a series of lesson plans…

They include griots we already know and love, as well as those who probably ain’t already on your radar. They include writers, activists, visual artists, rappers, chefs, and more. The first lesson plan—the free one that probably brought you here—is about the griot and activist, Assata Shakur. The second is about the griot and painter, Basquiat.

Every lesson plan includes something to read, maybe something to watch or listen to, definitely something to write (so make sure you have your pens and notebooks handy), and plenty to think about and talk about.

Griots R We is recommended for ages 13 and up…

And, yes, that includes adults too. If your children/students are younger than 13, but you think they can grasp the material, go for it. You may have to tweak it for further comprehension.

Griots R We is meant to spark conversations…

So some might knock out a lesson plan in two hours while others might take two days or even two weeks. That’s cool. I advise creating more conversations by researching the terms and topics you aren’t familiar with. Fred Hampton, for instance, is mentioned in Assata’s lesson plan. If you or someone in the group ain’t privy to who he is, that’s an opportunity to learn even more together. The purpose of these lesson plans are to build connections between each other and the material. No one is smarter than anyone else, and we’re all in this thang learning together.
