Kids' Curiosity + Elders' Wisdom = Magic

Krak Teet 4 Kids is a series of workshops and camps for the 18 and under crew all over the country—in after school programs, classroom takeovers, summer camps, breakout sessions, etc. It’s a brilliant opportunity to show kids that history ain’t some far away subject involving people we’ve never met and will likely never meet. Personal history is family history which is community history which is national history and world history.

How you talk, what you eat, how you grieve and celebrate, the kind of music you listen to and the dances you do are all part of your culture. And culture evolves through the generations. Most likely, we don’t talk like our elders do. We don’t entertain or heal ourselves the same way they did either. How we communicate and survive have changed. That information is still valuable though. Further, it highlights why we should also krak teet about our own memories, regardless how young we are.

Krak Teet 4 Kids gives us space to do just that 🙂

Interviewing Elders

Students train with Krak Teet founder, Trelani Michelle, to learn about her personal experience as an oral historian, how to prepare for an interview, how to conduct an interview, and what to do afterwards. By the time they sit with the elders, they ready to go!

All equipment and supplies are supplied by Krak Teet.

Reading and Writing Geechee

Ain’t no way someone can call themselves preserving culture or even respecting it if the language and dialect ain’t reflected in writing like it comes from the tongue. So we read and listen to dialect-heavy material from various time periods (e.g. slave narratives, Zora Neale Hurston, John Langston Gwaltney, and Krak Teet). Students are also encouraged to write how they talk.
